Guided Tour or Independent Tour?

Guided Tour or Independent Tour?

Whether it’s joining an organized group, go hiking with other independent travelers or to hire your own guide and / or your carrier, it is a personal decision to make based on the difficulty of the trek and available budget.

The guided hikes must be arranged legally through agencies of trekking registered in TAAN in Kathmandu and Pokhara. No other person – no hotel, no broker street, no nice person you just met, not even a trekking guide – is not legally authorized to organize a trek. During the main seasons the agencies organise trips of group regular, and it is usually easy to find a group making the hike of your choice. All the touring equipment, food, fuel and other necessary goods are transported by porters. The cook will prepare all meals during the trek from the campsite. Hikers carry only a small bag as required for the day. At night, tents for dining, sleeping and washing are provided and installed. Mattresses, sleeping bags, tables and seating are arranged by staff. For hiking in a large group, a Sirdar (guide-in-chief) is used to organize and then supervise the whole program. A sherpa (assistant guide) is also engaged to direct the staff and assist the Sirdar. All ground transportation, permissions, local taxes, insurance carrier, porter charges and entrance fees to national parks or sites which are part of the trip are organised by the agency.

When you sign up with an agency, you should talk to more people and to get detailed information about the differences of service, in addition to the base cost. The recommendations of other people you know and who have used the services of guides or companies trekking can be very useful. Some guides or organizations of trekking provide better services and more professional than others. This could have an impact on your comfort and convenience, or where an altitude gain important, or a difficult journey is involved, could become a real security problem. Having someone long experienced, professional and attentive could be very important.

If you use the services of guides and porters, it is customary to present a tip to the main guide at the end of the trip. This will be distributed between the various people employed in your group. Like most tips, the amount varies according to the quality of the services provided, but it may vary between 5% and 10% of the total cost of your trip.

The trekking independent is quite easy in the main trekking areas.

If you are hiring staff independently and without an agency, be aware of your responsibilities to ensure that your guide is appropriately equipped for work and rest in safety. Also, be aware that foreigners holding a tourist visa are not legally allowed to hire staff directly.

Stay safe : Precautions To be Carried before Trekking in Nepal

Stay safe : Precautions To be Carried before Trekking in Nepal

Altitude sickness : Risky factor during trekking in Nepal

please read a lot about altitude sickness. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms and do not ignore them. Be sure to adhere to a schedule of increase careful and drink lots of fluids. If you or a member of your group starts to feel the symptoms of mountain sickness do not rise further and, if they do not improve, then descend to a lower altitude. Take tablets of diamox (acetazolamide), that you can buy in pharmacies in Nepal. Diamox forces the kidneys to excrete bicarbonate in the urine, making the blood more acidic, which stimulates breathing and increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. Diamox is not an immediate solution to the altitude sickness; it speeds up part of the acclimatization process, which helps to relieve the symptoms. It may take a day or two, and requires waiting without any further rapid ascent. It is often advisable to descend if even mild acute mountain sickness is experienced. In the event of serious illness or symptoms of pulmonary edema of high altitude (HAPE) or cerebral edema of altitude (HACE), it is essential to get down with another hiker.

Please consult the pharmacist when buying Diamox and do your own research. There is also a discussion free to Manang on altitude sickness every day of the season. One thing that is often overlooked, is that your body needs large amounts of water at altitude to combat the disease, so make sure you drink more than usual!

Contamination of water and food

Buy antibiotics for the infections from the stomach to the pharmacy. Get a script for bacterial and a script for infections amebic is recommended. Pharmaceuticals are cheap in Nepal!

For drinking water, the best practice is to treat all water as being contaminated, in particular the water of the cities. Although bottled water is often available, the disposal of plastic bottles is a serious problem without a simple solution. Do not buy bottled water during the trek, because there is no system of garbage disposal on the trek. It is less expensive and better for the environment to treat your own water. The two main options for trekkers are to use the stations of safe drinking water along the trek for a small fee or bring your own water purification. Tablets of chlorination and iodine are available in the main cities. You can also use a filter with a ceramic cartridge or a UV treatment, such as a Steripen which should remove anything older than 1 micron. You may want to combine two of these systems just to make sure that the water is completely safe. Use treated water for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety considerations Wear

Always carry  a flashlight or a headlamp, water, food and a mobile phone with the number of evacuation from the helicopter (on the profile of the trekking) in the event of an emergency.

Criminal activity

Some trails are known for their encounters with the bandits desperate, although this is quite rare.

Insurance rescue: Trekking Information  in Nepal

Before the departure check that your travel insurance covers trekking activities and the conditions. Be aware that some insurance companies even consider that walking in the mountains, is a “mountaineering” and does not provide protection. You may need to shop around. Most of the agencies of trekking deemed to require proof of insurance to the rescue before you begin your hike. It would be very expensive to pay for a rescue by helicopter at 5,000 metres.

Hiking alone

Make sure to walk with other people, especially during treks side of roads with no clear. If a problem arises, it is much easier to get help if other people are nearby. A lot of people are missing or died on treks. If you don’t have a partner to trekking to Kathmandu or Pokhara, it is usually easy to find other people sharing the same ideas and travel plans are similar and work together. Even if you start only at the beginning of the trail, you will probably meet the same people along the trail and share of the pavilions at night.

Medicines (First add kit) :

Diamox: Important to carry when hiking above 3000 meters. Can be purchased cheaply in Kathmandu.
Imodium : It stops diarrhea
Cipro / Metronidazole: Its an antibiotic used for extreme cases of diarrhea.
Electrolyte: For use when body looses essential salts. Eg – diarrhea, long hike causing excessive sweating.
lbuprofen: It’s a painkiller for muscle pain, its normal to have it on the mountain after long hike.
